Improving the Employee/Employer Relationship with 4 Key Actions

Strong employee/employer relationships are critical to an organization’s success. A satisfying workplace leads to increased productivity, which drives revenue to boost a company’s bottom line. Likewise, employees should be open with employers in communicating concerns or questions – and employers should encourage these types of exchanges. If an employee holds back on information for fear of retribution, the company suffers from negativity and a drop in productivity. Plus, unhappy employees lead to high turnover, which results in considerable costs related to hiring and training new team members.
  1. Focus on Positive Connections: Emotions are contagious, so employers must focus on positive expressions in interacting with employees. If a leader is frustrated with the latest financials or company performance, this spreads to employees and can impact productivity. An employer who concentrates on optimistic communications extends positive emotions to the team. Even if the outlook is less than rosy, leaders should always serve as an inspiration to employees rather than a harbinger of “doom and gloom.”
  1. Show Appreciation: Bonuses and incentive plans are perfect as rewards for high performance, but employers should also show appreciation in non-monetary encouragement. If an employee is consistently exceeding expectations, let them know their contribution matters. Employers should make it a goal to extend a compliment to a different team member five or so times per day.   1. Request Feedback – and Act on It: As mentioned, open communication is essential to the employer/employee relationship, but it’s not enough to just hear what your employees have to say. If there are specific areas where feedback should lead to action, make sure to implement proper changes or policies. Your employees are a great source of information and their insights can lead to better, more efficient practices for your entire company. And give credit where credit is due if employee feedback directly impacts performance. You want to encourage future feedback to capitalize on great ideas.
